Increase cash flow; Start using debit orders for your businesses payment collections

In today’s ever expanding world of payment collections the debit order reigns supreme as the ultimate low cost solution to efficient bulk payment collection. If you have thought about starting to utilize debit order payments for your collections then read this article to get an overview of this payment collection system.

Let’s first have a look at what a debit order is. A debit order is defined as a payment instruction typically used for the monthly collection of funds. A debit order gives a third party authority to collect money from your bank account or credit card given permission to do so by a written, telephonic or electronic mandate.

But then you may ask, what is the difference between a debit order and a stop order? Well, it is pretty simple, a stop order is an instruction that you issue to your bank to make a series of future dated recurring payments, whereas a debit order is an instruction that you provide to a third party.

Now that we have that cleared up, did you know what there is more than one type of debit order? Yes, there are actually three types of debit order in common use throughout the payment collection industry:

  • EFT debit orders
  • AEDO (Authenticated Early Debit Orders)
  • NAEDO (Non Authenticated Early Debit Orders)

All of these are facilities that allow for a third party to collect money from a client’s account. EFT debit orders are the standard debit order payment instructions directed by a third party to the credit card or bank account of a paying customer in terms of a mandate granted by the customer. Aedo and Naedo are payment systems which facilitate the processing of Early Debit Orders (EDO) which is simply a debit order processed close to a credit payment.  Aedo require pin authentication from a point of sale while Naedo’s do not.  This restricts Naedo debit order submission to bank accounts only.

Now that you know what they are, why should you use debit orders? It’s simple; debit orders help you take control of your payment collection. Naedo’s allow tracking on accounts to process a payment close to a credit payment so your chance of collecting payments increase and with that so does your cash flow. You save your clients money on bank charges and you receive accurate reconciliation information regarding paid and unpaid payments immediately.

All things considered adopting debit orders for your businesses payment collections will give you greater control over payment collection, increased revenue and leave you in a better financial position.

Tips to streamline you recurring billing

Are you familiar with the term recurring billing? Have you ever considered using it in the context of your business to enhance payment for the products and services you provide? Most small business owners don’t know what recurring billing can do for their business. So let’s check out what recurring billing is and then – what it can do for your business.

Ask yourself, what is recurring billing? Recurring billing is used by businesses to charge customers a specified amount more than once. The amount can differ, but is usually the same on every recurrence and the term on which the debit is submitted can repeat on any frequency eg. Weekly, monthly, annually etc. Charges can be submitted to your credit card, bank account or account with a payment gateway.

So now that we have established what it is, let’s find out how recurring billing can benefit your business:

Choosing the best payment gateway for your business

There are many avenues of payment on the market today that enable your clients to make payment for the products and services they order from your business. Basic payment methods like wire transfers (Electronic funds transfers), cash, direct bank deposit and cheques are accepted by most businesses and offer you clients a good base of general payment methods. But it is always a good thing to give your clients choice.

Online orders can be settled through several other payment methods. Join me as I take a look at what payment gateways are available to the small business owner and suggest easy to follow methods of identifying which payment gateway would suit your businesses’ style best.

International vs local clientele

First on the list is identifying what kind of clients your business has. Are most of your clients based in your own region or country or do the majority of your sales come from clients that are outside of your country or immediate geographic region.

Secrets to better payment collection

So, you have issued your professional looking invoice, now you need to collect payment for it. It is recommended to give your clients as many easy ways as possible to pay your invoices. Collecting payment for the products or services you render becomes infinitely easier if you make it simple and easy for your clients to pay. We recommend having the following payment methods available to maximize your ability to collect payment:

  • A way to accept instant secure payments via credit card
  • Facilities to capture and process electronic funds or wire transfers as well as direct or bank deposits
  • The ability for clients to pay via an automated recurring debit order from bank account or credit card

It is important to remember that you have choice. Shop around for payment gateways with the lowest rates. Many payment gateways do not give you the ability to easily export your client’s payment details. This prevents you from switching between gateways easily. Shop around for a payment facilitator to give you more freedom. A payment facilitator will store client billing data securely on your and the gateways behalf and allow easy switching between gateways, so you always have the cheapest rates and your clients the most choice.

Payment gateways that support ACH payments

I received an email this morning inquiring about payment gateways that support ACH payments. ACH payments is defined by the brains at Wikipedia as:

Automated Clearing House (ACH) is an electronic network for financial transactions in the United States. ACH processes large volumes of credit and debit transactions in batches. ACH credit transfers include direct deposit payroll and vendor payments. ACH direct debit transfers include consumer payments on insurance premiums, mortgage loans, and other kinds of bills. Debit transfers also include new applications such as the Point-of-Purchase (POP) check conversion pilot program sponsored by NACHA-The Electronic Payments Association. Both the government and the commercial sectors use ACH payments. Businesses are also increasingly using ACH to collect from customers online, rather than accepting credit or debit cards.”

For me, a South African, this was the first time I had ever heard of an ACH payment. So it was with a great amount of zeal that I dived into googling the heck out of “what is an ACH payment”. In my frenzied acquisition of knowledge I came across Authorize.net who do indeed offer ACH payment processing. On a side note,  while I was exploring their site that I came across and read a bit about the Authorize.net affiliate reseller program. Now I’m a sucker for an affiliate program! When I hear ‘affiliate program’ I think ‘passive recurring income’. And when I think ‘passive recurring income’ I smell money. Now money makes the world go round. If the world stopped going round we would all fall off it and fly off into space. And that would be bad.

So it is with this decidedly altruistic point of view that I decided to sign up for Authorize.nets affiliate program… only to be thwarted in my planet saving endeavors by the fact that I am not currently based in the US. Their Affiliate Reseller Program is “currently only available to companies with a U.S. Tax ID or EIN, and a U.S. based bank account.” Boo. :( So no passive recurring income for me from Authorize.net just yet, but I digress.

I’d like to invite  readers, payment gateway users or gateway developers and owners to let me know if their payment gateways support ACH payments. Suggest a few payment gateways that do support ACH payments and I can compile a list of systems, plus reviews, that everyone can use. I’d also very much like to compile cleared information on what ACH payments are, who can use them and for what. So if anyone has useful information, please drop me a mail.
